Steering

The steering system in a car or truck consists of multiple parts performing specfic functions to make it easier for the driver to turn the wheels. New vehicles usually have what is called a rack and pinon steering system which moves the steering rack through a pinon gear connected to the power steering pump. This system allows for the drivers turning of the steering wheel to translate to the power steering pump to increase the force necessary to turn the vehicle. If your vehicle is difficult to make turns in parking lots or after coming to a full stop you may have a problem with your steering system.

Why does my steering wheel feel loose when turning?

Steering wheels can have play in their range of motion when the tie rod ends or steering rack become worn. This can be noticed when you turn the steering wheel back and forth, it will move about an inch or so with little to no resistence and withouth the wheels turning. Loosness or play in the steering system can lead to the vehicle pulling more to one side, drift when chnaging lanes, and creates uneven tire wear. An excessively worn steering yolk, a bad steering coupler, or loose connections in the steering column can also cause this problem. It's best to have a certified professional auto technician inspect your steering system if you are experiencing steering issues.

Why is my steering wheel not centered?

A steering wheel that is crooked leaning either to the right or left when driving straight is usually an indication of poor alignment. Poor alignment is generally an indication of mechanical wear on components in the steering and suspension systems. If the vehicle also shakes or vibrates with the increase in acceleration or speed then it is in need of repairs and should be taken to a qualified mechanic for inspection.
