Timing Belts & Chains

Vehicle timing belts are designed to link the camshaft to the crankshaft which in turn controls the pistons in the engine. By controlling the timing of the crankshaft and camshaft the timing belt makes sure the engine is performing at its best. When this timing gets interrupted due to a number of reasons, then the engine will not run at its top performance. Replacing a timing belt early before it completely fails can save it from damaging other nearby parts and components.

When to replace Timing Belts & Chains

Just like most vehicle problems, there will be some signs that your timing belt or chain has become worn and needs to be replaced. If you notice a sluggish or misfiring engine this could be caused by worn teeth on the timing belt which causes it to slip. When the timing belt slips this throws off the camshaft rotation and the firing of the pistons. Smoke coming from your exhaust or engine compartment may be due to a timing belt problem which creates a problem in timing for exhaust and air to escape and let into the cylinders. This timing offset can lead to an unsynchronized opening and closing of cylinders that have holes responsible for this exchange.

What could happen if my timing belt or timing chain breaks?

Having a timing belt break can cause a number of other engine parts and components to fail or break. The pistons can bend valves or break if the crankshaft is not in sync with the camshaft. If the camshaft is not working correctly with the timing belt it could cause broken pieces of metal that can contaminate the engine oil causing a drop in oil pressure and ultimately engine failure. Timing belts should be replaced every 60k to 100k miles because they are made out of rubber and eventually wear down. Timing chains tend to have a longer lifespan due to modern improvements and it is made of metal. Because timing chains are made out of metal they can cause more engine damage if they break and pieces get into other moving parts.
